The Art of Competing: Dynamic Energy

Yes, that’s a diagram that you see, all will be explained in due time. SmileTwo of my band directors once told me that a key to a great musical piece is changing dynamic levels. Dynamics in music refers to sound level and quality. No matter how nice a melody is, if it never changes or progresses it’s flat and can become a bore. The same can be said of a performance spectacle, whether in theater, choral singing, dance, and even performance modeling.
When putting together a show, especially a competition piece, it’s important that scene progresses and has versatile structure yet a cohesive point-of-view (or theme). Each segment of the piece should have a different vibe and flow. To illustrate my point, I’m going to dissect this Couture Production’s winning show from 2008. Why? Because it’s one of the few winning shows that apply illustrates my point that’s available on the net (and that I feel is of substance). Ugh! Once again the Ram in me vomits from having to give props to these tired Aggies, but they are on-point. Where is Toyland or 7 Deadly Sins when you need them?! *pulls hair*

Break down of this show's changing moods:
  • Right off the piece opens up with excitement, reflected in the ring master, dancers, and then triad of baton twirlers
  • Then the mood changes to a more mellow, cool tone when the sexy burlesque girls come out with the "lions" (where was the mane?) Lol.
  • The energy picks up again with the Missy Elliot routine, lolli-pop girls, and a brief runway that showcases colorful clothing, in contrast to the sexy swim wear and uniform black slacks that preceded
  • Next we go back down the energy wave to a dark/mysterious interlude/transition with mirrors that reflect the blue lights on the stage back into the audience (brilliant).
  • Then the boys' runway segment begins when the lights brighten and hip-hop beats pick up the mood
  • What sealed this win for CP was the final segment of the show and it's ending mood. It ended on a high with CP's signature traffic runways, the models pumped in color club, thrift, and altered clothing that was creative and refreshing; house, rave, and Baltimore club throbbed in the background making the show end on the high it started off with.
  • This up-down-suite of energy and mood kept the crowd engaged and captivated, along with the drag queens pumping on-stage

So...I posted this clip of the "Best of the Best" Competition from 2008 of Couture, Iconz Models, and Verge to further illustrate the energy/mood competing. Verge won, as we all know. It's no question that their show's entertainment value was aided by the changing moods and sexy mens. I'm not going to break it down again, but after viewing you should be able to see where each troupe went right or wrong.

Side Note: PLEASE DO NOT SWAGGER JACK THESE FOUR SHOWS. IF you are doing something with the same theme, be original! Cheaters only get but so far.
